The Akwa Ibom Business Directory covers one of Nigeria’s most infrastructure-rich states. Akwa Ibom was the first state in the country to own an airline in 2007. Over the years, the state government has developed facilities that few others can match, including a state-owned aviation sector, an independent power plant, a five-star resort, and a modern international stadium.

Akwa Ibom as a Business State

Akwa Ibom as a Business State.

Akwa Ibom, known as “the land of promise,” is a small, dense, oil-rich state. The state now has an estimated population of about 7.2 million, with an annual growth rate of 3.4%. It has a total land area of 7,249 square kilometers.

Despite its size, Akwa Ibom has the third-highest estimated state GDP in Nigeria (₦7.77 trillion) in 2026, while the state’s GDP per person is ranked 4th in the country. The state’s economic drivers are its oil production, expanding infrastructure, and aviation industry.

A large portion of Akwa Ibom’s revenue comes from the 13% derivation fund shared with oil-producing communities in Nigeria through their state government pursuant to Section 162, subsection 2 of the Nigerian Constitution. Akwa Ibom remains the top oil-producing state, producing about 504,000 barrels daily.

The state has received ₦2.53 trillion in revenue during the first 32 months of Governor Umo Eno’s administration, surpassing the previous eight-year revenue (Premium Times). Reconstruction of major roads, the state airport’s corridor, streetlights, and several state-owned commercial businesses, including Champion Breweries Plc and Ibom Model Farm, among others.

Akwa Ibom heavily relies on its oil for finance, and this puts the state in a vulnerable position. BudgIT’s team on Natural Resource and Climate Governance has warned that the state’s heavy dependence on oil leaves it vulnerable to global economic shocks and says diversifying the state’s economy is now a necessity in light of the global energy transition.

In response, the state government has welcomed gas-related industries and petrochemical investments under Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE agenda. Although the state has made efforts to increase its internally generated revenue, but its non-oil revenue is quite small compared to the overall revenue base.

The Active Sectors

The Active Sectors.

  1. Oil and Gas

The state hosts International Oil Companies (IOCs), NNPC-linked production facilities, an established oilfield services industry, and a growing cluster of marginal-field operators listed on the Akwa Ibom Business Directory.

Emadeb Petroleum Exploration & Production Company (E&P) Limited pivoted from distributing fuel to producing oil, and in November 2025, it drilled its first oil from the Ibom Field, an offshore marginal field in Akwa Ibom. Since Emadeb acquired the field in the 2020 marginal-field bid round, it has invested over $100 million in its development program. The company is preparing for the second phase, which will see it drill two more oil wells to triple production by Q4 of 2026.

This is an example of a non-state-owned or funded energy company investing in Akwa Ibom’s oil industry.

  1. Aviation — Ibom Air

The state-owned airline is arguably one of the biggest commercial projects done in Akwa Ibom. The airline has nine aircraft in its fleet — seven Bombardier CRJ-900s and two Airbus A220-300s (Business Day) — but flight-tracking data within the same period listed seven aircraft in active service.

As of June 2026, Ibom Air serves seven destinations. Six domestic destinations (Uyo, Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, Enugu, and Port Harcourt) and one international destination in Accra, Ghana. The airline also made history as the first state-owned airline to serve an international destination with the inaugural Uyo-Accra flight on the 2nd of May 2026. The airline also has plans to incorporate a couple of African routes like Yaoundé, Douala, Libreville; Nairobi, etc. in the near future.

As part of the state government’s plans to keep the airline commercially viable, Governor Umo Eno has intensified the state’s efforts to expand Ibom Air’s fleet and develop a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Uyo as a regional aviation hub. He has also held discussions with SAMCO maintenance facility and Airbus executives about the MRO facility he intends to develop.

These investments in the aviation sector show the state is making progress to strengthen Ibom Air’s position commercially as competition in Nigeria’s aviation sector increases.

  1. Power — Ibom Power Plant

Ibom Power Company (IPC) — one of the first independent power plants in Nigeria—was incorporated on the 15th of January, 2001 by the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP) as a private limited liability company.

In May 2008, the power plant was licensed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to generate 191MW of electricity. NERC changed the license and increased it to 685MW of electricity in November 2015 to house both the 191MW phase 1 and proposed 50MW phase 2.

  1. Hospitality and Tourism

Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, previously known as Le Méridien Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort and Ibom ICON Hotel & Golf Resort, remains one of the biggest tourism attractions in Akwa Ibom State. It was built in 2007 by the state government under the administration of Governor Victor Attah.

It remains one of the highest-rated hotels in Uyo on Tripadvisor. The resort has 163 rooms and suites, a conference room, an 18-hole golf course, among other attractions.

  1. Agriculture and Agribusiness

Akwa Ibom has strong agricultural potential with its palm oil, cassava, rubber, and cocoa production. Over the years, the state government has established several agricultural projects like the Ibom Model Farm and the Cassava End-to-End Smart Project to boost agriculture in the state. However, the difference between some of the farming programs the state government owns and some of the privately owned businesses operating in this sector can be quite glaring.

For example, Inyene Agro Processing Factory, founded by Blessing Akpan, runs a cassava processing plant that produces vitamin A-enriched cassava flakes — popularly known as “garri.” Earlier this year, the factory received a ₦150 million investment from GBFoods. The investment will enable the business to expand its production capacity from 4 tons of garri to 16 tons of garri monthly, and also include other forms of cassava products like flour, starch, and animal feed.

Compare this private sector business to the state-owned Akwa Palm Industries. This oil palm plantation with more than 200,000 palm trees is spread across a 3,000-hectare area with the state government owning over 95% of the shares. However, in 2021, it was taken out of the corporate register after gross mismanagement left the company with multi-million-dollar debts to its workers and contractors. The state government incorporated another company, Dakaada Global Oil Palm Limited to take over the business.

  1. Professional Services

There’s an active professional-service market in Uyo that handles legal, accounting, and consulting work. Oil and gas, and other corporate bodies also make use of this market for their financial and contractual operations. Even the state government requires the professional services of this market in certain areas as well. But there’s little public data on how much business this market handles for the government, oil and gas sector, or other private businesses.

  1. Technology and Digital Services

Start Innovation Hub, a tech incubation company has indicated that its plan for the next decade is to bring in a minimum of $100 million in startup funding into the state.

The Ibom Blockchain Xperience is an annual Web3 event in Uyo. Over the years, it has become one of the most significant blockchain and Web3 gatherings in West Africa.

Investment and Development Activity

Investment and Development Activity.

Akwa Ibom’s investment pipeline in this sector has seen progressive development. In 2016, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved investments in the petrochemical industry worth about $7 billion in the state. And according to the Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone Authority (OGFZA), the Liberty Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) has received investment commitments worth over $15 billion from the 12 licensed international companies operating in the zone.

The BUA Refinery project — with a projected capacity of 200,000 barrels per day— is part of this alongside many other major projects. The BUA group is overseeing this project that is expected to produce Euro-V standard fuels and polypropylene in the Ibeno axis of the Liberty Free Trade Zone.

Preheat Energies, is another company partnering with the Akwa Ibom State government to build a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the state, by converting flared gas into cleaner energy as part of its support for the state’s energy transition goals.

These large-scale investment projects are being funded by private and foreign investors, not the Akwa Ibom State Government and it is different from the projects the state government has developed with federal funding from its oil revenue.

The major question is, whether these investments from these companies will create jobs for the people of Akwa Ibom or if they will result in more business owners across the state.

As part of the ARISE Agenda, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to collaborate in areas like tourism, energy, skills acquisition, amongst others.

Venture investment for businesses in Uyo are a lot lesser than in Lagos. The ₦150 million investment by GBFoods Africa in Inyene Agro remains the clearest recent example.
